Food & Nutrition at Blooming Futures Daycare

At Blooming Futures Daycare, we believe that good food is an important part of helping children grow, learn and thrive. Mealtimes are about much more than simply eating. They are a time for children to enjoy new experiences, develop independence, sit together with friends and begin to build a positive relationship with food from an early age.
As part of our commitment to supporting children’s health and wellbeing, our menus are carefully planned to provide a variety of nutritious, balanced and child-friendly meals and snacks throughout the day. We follow current Early Years nutritional guidance and make sure our menus include a good balance of the nutrients children need as they grow.
We love introducing children to a variety of tastes, colours, textures and ingredients, encouraging them to try new foods at their own pace in a relaxed and positive environment. We want children to leave the table feeling happy, nourished and ready for their next adventure!
Our approach to food and nutrition is also an important part of our commitment the NOF - Nourishing Our Future programme. Through the award, we continue to develop our knowledge and practice around healthy eating, helping us to provide families with practical information, ideas and support that can be used both at nursery and at home.
We also understand that every child is different. We work closely with families to support allergies, intolerances, dietary requirements and cultural or family preferences, so that every child can feel included and comfortable at mealtimes.
The Four Food Groups
We use the four main food groups to help us provide children with a varied and balanced diet.
Fruit & Vegetables
Fruit and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre and are an important part of a healthy diet. We offer children a variety of fruits and vegetables, giving them opportunities to experience different colours, flavours and textures. We know that children can sometimes need to see and try a food several times before they decide they like it, so we encourage exploration without pressure.
At home, offering fruit or vegetables alongside meals and snacks is a simple way to continue encouraging healthy eating habits.
Starchy Carbohydrates
Foods such as bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and cereals provide children with the energy they need to play, learn and explore. We include a variety of starchy foods across our menus, including wholegrain options where appropriate. We believe variety is key and enjoy helping children discover different foods and ways of enjoying them.
Protein
Protein helps support children's growth, development, muscles and immune system.
Our menus include a range of protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses, as well as suitable plant-based alternatives. Offering different sources of protein helps children experience a variety of foods while getting the nutrients they need.
Milk, Dairy & Alternatives
Milk, yoghurt and cheese provide important nutrients such as calcium and protein, which help support healthy bones and teeth. We include suitable dairy foods and fortified alternatives as part of our menus, while taking individual dietary requirements into account.
Healthy Eating at Home
We know that healthy eating doesn't stop when children leave nursery. That's why supporting families is such an important part of our approach. As part of our NOF Award, we aim to share practical ideas, information and resources with families to make healthy eating at home feel achievable and enjoyable — not complicated.
We will regularly share family-friendly recipes, meal ideas and nutrition tips here that you can try together at home. We hope these give you inspiration and make it easier to continue the positive food experiences your child has at Blooming Futures.
If you ever have questions about your child's diet, eating habits or nutritional needs, please speak to a member of our team. We're always happy to listen, share ideas and work together with you.
At Blooming Futures Daycare, we're not just helping children to grow — we're helping them develop healthy habits and a positive relationship with food that can last a lifetime.
